All Occasion Card 215a
Show me a day when the world wasn't new. Sister Barbara Hance (1928-1993) Photo: John Schoenwalter
What a photograph, by John
Schoenwalter. The text is from a conversation I had with Sister Barbara Hance,
a few days before she died. Sister Barbara was one of the founders of the
Emmaus homeless shelter (more on which on the back of the card). She was a
devout nun, of course, but with a mind of her own. On that day she said that
the priest was about to come to give her last rites. “It doesn’t make much
sense to me,” she said. “What makes sense to you?” I asked. “Eagles,” Barbara
said. We have eagles around here. You don’t see them every day, but they’re not
rare. The day Barbara died, and for more than a week afterward, there was
almost always an eagle in the sky over her house. No fooling. – MB
